The world of Interior decoration has embraced new floral and botanical design for use in our homes in the shape of wallpapers and fabrics. Enchanting Chinoiserie has reinvented itself by combining oriental blossoms, exquisite botanicals and stunning florals with contemporary jewel like colours and flashes of gold and silver.
Having reached its height in France during the 18th century we now crave these wonderful decorations as we desire the extravagance, colour, eccentricity and humour that it can offer.
This course taps in to this inventive imagery, into the way it releases inhibitions about what is permissible in decoration. Chinoiserie can be truly stunning in both traditional and contemporary colours.
Feel free to break the rules in scale and perspective. Chinoiserie is a way of turning the world upside down in order to reach a far-off shore, a land of imagination whose common sense is abandoned.
We will look at typical examples of the art with the aid of photo-copied designs (following the original tradition of using printed copies) devise combinations of designs to produce samples using water based paints.
The charm of Chinoiserie lies partly in its naivety, which gives a freedom and lightness which we can hopefully generate during the course. We will proceed to paint and use decoupage on paper, for inspirational wallpaper creations as well as on fabric which could be used for wall hangings or interior decoration projects.
This course does not require students to have any prior knowledge of art or drawing and is suitable for complete beginners.
